Event History
October 6, 2008 - Pizza Day
Our students did it all — every single step — replicating lessons they are
studying in 6th Grade Social Studies about ancient civilizations. They
planted wheat and amaranth (a very ancient grain), then harvested it and
allowed it to dry, and this past week they threshed, winnowed and used an
old- fashioned hand-cranked stone grinder to pulverize the wheat and turn it
into flour. And then they made bread (well, baby whole wheat pizzas), and
baked them with help from Sandwich Isle Bread Co. bakers Kevin and Kay
Cabrera in a wood-fired oven! It was a delicious transformation... and
perhaps also some of the first wheat grown in Hawai’i in a long time.
Students also used the experience for their Language Arts descriptive
writing benchmark. Warm Mahalo to the Cabreras and to garden staff and
volunteers and 6th Grade teachers who helped students every step of the way!

September 25, 2008 - Free Food Giveaway
Mahalo, Mala’ai students, volunteers and friends for the free food giveaway
last week after school! There was basil, lemon grass and lettuce starts
from our garden, and chard gleaned from Urban Farmers along with recipes and
delicious Chard Cheese Pie tastings. It was the first of what is hoped to
be frequent sharings of the bounty of the land to introduce tasty new foods
and ono healthy recipes.
