Event History

October 6, 2008 - Pizza Day
Our students did it all — every single step — replicating lessons they are studying in 6th Grade Social Studies about ancient civilizations. They planted wheat and amaranth (a very ancient grain), then harvested it and allowed it to dry, and this past week they threshed, winnowed and used an old- fashioned hand-cranked stone grinder to pulverize the wheat and turn it into flour. And then they made bread (well, baby whole wheat pizzas), and baked them with help from Sandwich Isle Bread Co. bakers Kevin and Kay Cabrera in a wood-fired oven! It was a delicious transformation... and perhaps also some of the first wheat grown in Hawai’i in a long time. Students also used the experience for their Language Arts descriptive writing benchmark. Warm Mahalo to the Cabreras and to garden staff and volunteers and 6th Grade teachers who helped students every step of the way!
