- November 30, 2008 - Jam Sessions
8:30 am., repeat class at 1:30 pm
Class size limited to 15 each. Cost: $15 for Slow Food Hawaii members;
$20 for others. Would you like to learn everything you need to know
about making jams and jellies (and maybe syrups) with the fruit you have
in your back yard or find in the farmer's markets? SFH member and
tropical fruit expert Ken Love and Chef Betty Saiki will teach you
everything you need to know: equipment, pectins, how cooking time
changes taste and texture, how to preserve safely. The class will be
taught at the Culinary Arts kitchen at Hawaii Community College at
Kealakekua. You will leave with a jar of jam or jelly and a lot of
knowledge. To register, send your check to Slow Food Hawaii, P.O. Box
6954, Kamuela, HI 96743. Don't wait - this one will sell out!
- December 14, noon-3pm Christmas
potluck - Anna Ranch. Members and guests welcome. These is always a
popular event, with great food. No charge, but this year we'll have be
having something special to support our local food banks (more later).
- January 31, 2009 Hilo potluck
and Tour of Lyman House Museum's "Key Ingredients," a Smithsonian
traveling exhibit focusing on local food culture. $7 entry fee for
Museum (kama'aina), more info to follow.
- Do you have overflowing orange, tangerine, avocado,
etc. trees, or runaway zucchini? As part of an Urban Farming
initiative, volunteers in Waimea and Waikoloa will pick or pick up fruits
or vegetables from your garden you wish to share. These will be delivered
to the Food Bank. Call Tina Wirth at 887-1087 or email
Sue Kilbride.
- We would like to expand the presence of Slow Food
Hawaii to other farmers markets on the Island, and are
looking for volunteers in Kona, North Hawaii or Volcano who might be willing
to set up a booth from time to time at the Keauhou, Hawi or Volcano farmers
markets. Please help!
