TOUR OF RARE NATIVE PLANTS OFFERED

You don’t need to climb mountains or hike into remote gulches to see rare native plants. They are easily accessible for all to enjoy in the heart of Waimea in Ulu La’au, the Waimea Nature Park. The park, developed by Waimea Outdoor Circle, invites all interested community members for a special tour and out planting of rare native plants in Ulu La’au. The tour is on Saturday August 22 at 9:00 starting in the greenhouse. The special event will be led by Kathy Kawakami, the endangered species out planting coordinator at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA), on the slopes of Mauna Kea. She will share her knowledge of these unique plants and will demonstrate the planting techniques used to give them the best possible start. Ulu La’au is thrilled that these plants have found a home here in Waimea where they are being nurtured and are thriving. Please call the Park Manager, Barrie Moss, to reserve your place in this tour at 769-4378. There is no charge.

There will be an ongoing regular volunteer day from 9:00 until noon and we encourage you to stay and help our volunteers with regular park maintenance. A snack of home made cookies and fresh fruit will be served at noon. Tools, gloves and water are provided.

For further information on the Nature Park call the Park Chair Carol Hendricks, 885-4453 or Maintenance Chair Ken Block at 885-4753.

The Waimea Nature Park, a project of Waimea Outdoor Circle, is located behind Canada France Telescope headquarters off Mamalahoa Hwy near the Waimea Elementary School. Look for the Hawaiian warrior sign on the lawn of the CFH offices and turn down the unnamed road that leads directly into the Park. Please park inside the Park near the little green office building and the lua.
