KUKUI TREES IN ULU LA’AUWaimea Nature Park is pleased to announce the first planting of Hawaiian introduced trees in the park. Kukui trees which are “canoe plants” meaning the Hawaiians brought them along when they colonized these island, will be planted in the picnic area. We will be taking down several of the existing invasive Christmas Berry trees to make room for these fast growing trees. The plan is to rent the chipper from Pro-rental on the weekend of March 14-15 and chip the targeted trees as they are being cut. We will save the chips for use as mulch. Brooks Crandlemire of Custom Farm Services and his back hoe will be there to dig up the roots and stumps to make way for the irrigation lines and to dig the holes for the new trees. Hopefully by April we will be ready to plant the 8-15 gallon trees we plan to order. We need help! For the weekend that we have reserved the chipper we need your help hauling the downed trees and feeding the chipper. Can you spare a few hours on either Saturday or Sunday, March 14 or 15? We will have water, gloves, eye wear and ear plugs available. Sandwiches, fruit and cookies will be available for lunch on both days at noon. If you have a hard hat please wear it. The chain saw captain is Leningrad Elarionoff 885-1895 (call him if you intend to bring your chain saw) and chipper-feeding captain is Ken Block 885-4753. Both volunteer days start at 9:00. We plan to work until 3:00 on Saturday but Sunday we hope to finish by lunchtime. Please call Ken Block 885-4753 or Carol Hendricks 885-4453 if you intend to come, so we can get a lunch count. We especially need workers for after lunch on Saturday. Waimea Outdoor Circle is the leaseholder and developer of this 10-acre public park in the heart of Waimea. The park is located directly behind Canada France Hawaii Telescope offices off Mamalahoa Hwy. The park is open during daylight hours daily. Please park inside the park. Pick up a self-guiding brochure at the little green office building and take a tour of the native trees, shrubs and ground covers planted by our volunteers. The park is funded by grants and donations; no county workers or money is used. Submitted by Arlene Block, Secretary |
